For a number of years, many Anacortes churches pooled their motel voucher funds at the Anacortes Family Center. This allowed those churches to send inquiring citizens directly to AFC, in one-stop shopping. The idea was that we would not oblige homeless people to go from church-to-church in search of vouchers for motels, and it also enabled churches (in our monthly meetings at the Family Center) to have better oversight of who we all are actually supporting.
For the past five-ish years the motel voucher program received significant funding from Skagit County. As of 30 June 2025, that funding will dry up, and the program will be funded primarily by local church donations. With that, the program will be scaled back, with priority being given to Anacortes and San Juan Island residents for one-or-two night stays at motels. Recipients will be those in desperate need for overnight shelter (fleeing domestic violence, stranded, suddenly displaced, and to those who are within a day-or-two of coming into the Family Center.)
